Tour Information
It’s Historic Garden Week in Virginia. This is a time when garden enthusiasts can tour unique gardens across the whole state. On Tuesday April 12th, over 800 people visited a garden designed by Jane MacLeish in McLean, Virginia.
The house is sited on sloping land — rising up from the road and ending with the backdrop of woods. While the property is cohesive it has many surprises. There are numerous smaller gardens within the bigger garden. These range from: a private spa surrounded by huge boulders; a grotto with seeping, wet walls that flicker in the moonlight; to naturalistic woodland paths; an amplitheater; a large rear lawn; and small terraces of intricate stonework.
Each of these areas is prime for children’s play and large gatherings. It is a family garden much loved by young and old.
Lecture Topics
The Hunting Creek Garden Club of Alexandria, Virginia, The Technicalities of Creating a Garden.
“Making Gardens in America” is a discussion of American gardens from large estates to small intimate spaces. Jane gave this lecture to group of wives of foreign diplomats.
“Fantasy in the Garden” is a lively talk about having fun while creating gardens. Jane demonstrates unusual elements of surprise and whimsy that imaginative gardeners have added to their spaces.
“Follies” is the story of a few extraordinary garden buildings from a 17th century European tradition that, to some extent, reached into the U.S. and has continued to this day. Follies are elaborate, weird, fantastical (and often functionless) structures found in the most unexpected places on certain European estates, as well as in the backyards of creators with over-the-top imaginations. Jane is currently working on an iteration of this lecture describing the follies of Scotland.
Upcoming Lectures
Jane is due to lecture on “Imagination In The Garden” to Washington businesswomen this spring.
